Nichter Is Co-Investigator for Microbiome Study

Head shot of Regents' Professor Mark NichterProfessors Mark Nichter (SoA Regents’ Professor Emeritus), Melissa Melby (University of Delaware), and Tamara Giles-Vernick (Pasteur Institute-Paris) have received a catalyst grant from the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research to investigate “Engaging Public Health Perspectives for Translational Microbiome Research.” This exploratory study will be carried out in Arizona and Delaware in the United States; Paris, France; and a site yet to be determined in Japan. The study will investigate perceptions of gut health, the hygiene hypothesis and the microbiome, and how perceptions and products in the market have influenced dietary practices, use of probiotics and antibiotics, and the coexistence of ecological and militaristic concepts of promotive health.
