SW Artist is Subject of Ann Hedlund's New Book & Exhibit

Today

In a new book, Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick and Her Art (UA Press, 2025), Ann Hedlund (retired faculty, SoA and ASM) draws from the artist's papers to tell of her creative, adventure-filled life. Mac's paintings, prints, and sculptures range from naturalistic animals to impressionistic landscapes and abstracts. She also painted scenes of Navajo (Diné), Hopi, O'odham, and Yaqui people and events. UA anthropologists Emil "Doc" Haury, Ned Spicer, Ed Dozier, Joe Ben Wheat, and others, plus UA artist Maurice Grossman, and their families, collected Mac’s paintings and invited her to visit their field sites around the Four Corners region.

Mac Schweitzer's work is also the focus of an exhibition at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West from October 18, 2025, to September 30, 2026. Curated by Hedlund, “Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick Rediscovered” features nearly one hundred artworks, plus photos and ephemera, lost for sixty years and appearing in public for the first time.
