Jonathan Mabry (M.A. Arizona, 1985; Ph.D. Arizona, 1992), will join the SBS Dean’s Office on October 9, 2017 as Director of Community Engagement (formerly Outreach), replacing Lydia Breunig in the role. Dr. Mabry is currently the City of Tucson’s Historic Preservation Officer and City Archaeologist. He brings a wealth of cross-sector experience from the community to the college. Dr. Mabry was one of the chief architects behind Tucson’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. His past experience includes service with the Tumamoc Hill Advisory Committee, Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance, Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, Governor’s Archaeological Advisory Council, and Tucson-Pima County Historical Commission. He has partnered with a score or more of state and regional entities, including the Arizona Historical Society, Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, Arizona State Museum, Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, the San Ignacio Yaqui Council, San Xavier Co-op Farm, Southwest Folklife Alliance, the Tohono O’odham Nation, and city and county government offices across the region. Dr. Mabry brings a sizeable record of successful grant-writing and administration experience to his new position. He continues to find time to conduct archaeological fieldwork in sites in both Arizona and Sonora.
