Hanson and Hopkins Awarded Inaugural Doug Craig Memorial Grant
The Arizona Archaeological Council (AAC), in partnership with the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS), established the Douglas B. Craig Memorial Grant to honor the legacy of this beloved Arizona archaeologist. Kelsey E. Hanson (Ph.D. Candidate) and Maren Hopkins (SoA alum) were awarded this grant for their project titled “Ethnographic and Compositional Analyses of Juan Quezada’s Clay Preparation and Pottery Production.” This project draws upon both archaeometric and ethnographic methods to better understand variability in processed clays and their implications for archaeological provenance studies by documenting compositional changes at different stages in contemporary pottery production working closely with Juan Quezada (shown above), renowned potter from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico.
