Rebecca Bedwell, a Ph.D. student in the School of Anthropology, received first place for the 2018 Peter K. New Award from the Society for Applied Anthropology. It is an annual student competition for applied research projects in the social/behavioral sciences. Rebecca received this award for her M.A. thesis, “Diabetes Illness Narratives among Mexican Immigrants in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region.” Her thesis investigates experiences of type 2 diabetes among Mexican immigrants living in Tucson, Arizona, with a specific focus on conceptualizations of risk, heritability, individual responsibility, and experiences of emotion.
