Message from the Director

It’s June! In addition to welcoming summer’s arrival with our 100-degree days and fewer people in Tucson, this year many School of Anthropology faculty, students, and research staff are again able to mark the transition to summer by attending field schools and study abroad programs and traveling to their research sites. Just as I offer my sincerest congratulations to our recent graduates, I also recognize our students, staff, and faculty who made it through a second academic year amid the upheavals caused by a global pandemic layered on top of economic disparities, violence, and social injustices. Despite those challenges, members of our community have demonstrated that they can pull together, put others before themselves, and achieve their goals. In this edition, we inaugurate a special series in which we ask that you share photos and short stories about the places you are working and learning this summer and why you are there. Please make sure that everyone in your photos agrees to have their photo in anthro news! Stay tuned each week as we travel around the globe with our friends, peers, and colleagues.
