ANTH 313 Visits Pharmacy Museum

On November 23, 2021, the students enrolled in Health and Medicine in Classical Antiquity (taught by Professor Eleni Hasaki; ANTH/CHS/CLAS/HIST/HSP/RELI 313) resumed their regular field visits to the brand new location and museum setting of the Coit Museum of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Museum holdings, ranging from show globes (a visual marker of pharmacy locations) to the entire holdings of Upjohn’s Pharmacy from Disneyland, and a rich collection of artefacts from pharmacies in Tucson and Arizona, provide a fascinating window into the history of pharmacy on local and national levels. The students in this course with its diversity in majors including Anthropology, Classics, and Health Promotion Sciences, enjoyed the highly interactive exhibits with historical surveys from Egyptian and Roman to Medieval times and the development of Big Pharma. The Museum will officially open in Spring 2022, but its Director, Stephen Hall, always a gracious host to the 313 class visits, is happy to provide preview tours to students and faculty.
