Title: Chasing Elements of Communities Across Time and Space
Abstract: Identifying elements of communities in the archaeological record can be challenging. What processes allowed the forging and maintaining of community? How was community membership defined and negotiated? How do material elements of culture express community? Beyond material culture, what other avenues might lead to information on past communities? During nearly two decades of archaeological consulting for cultural resource management (CRM) projects in California and the US Southwest, Dr. Douglass has been fortunate to be a part of collaborative projects that allowed the study of communities, both through studying moments in time, as well as longitudinal analysis. In this talk, Dr. Douglass will discuss his long-term research on the nature and expression of communities.
