SBS Research Award for Kennedy
Graduating senior Adrianna Kennedy is the recipient of the Spring 2021 SBS Student Research Award for her research on Ötzi, the famous 5000-year-old Copper Age “Ice Man” whose body was discovered in the Italian Alps. Adrianna conducted her project, titled “A Possible Correlation between Ötzi’s Tattoos and Arsenic Poisoning,” in an independent study with Associate Professor Emma Blake in Spring 2020 and went on to present her findings at the Young Investigator Symposium organized by the Max Planck–Harvard Research Center for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean, held online via Zoom from Harvard University. The award committee, comprised of Natasha Warner (Linguistics), William Beezley (History), and Ginny Healy (SBS Development), commented on Adrianna’s research:
Ms. Kennedy has demonstrated superior abilities while in the School of Anthropology. She has developed an extremely interesting independent research topic. Her research work on…Ötzi the Ice Man has explored a new theory regarding…his life in the Copper Age involving the potential that he suffered from arsenic poisoning and that certain strategically placed tattoos may have been used to treat his symptoms. Her paper shows significant academic achievement and creativity.
