Title: Who Owns the Border?

Abstract: This talk examines the various jurisdictions and types of ownership involved in the economic exploitation of crossing points on the Sonora/Arizona borderlands. On the Mexican side, local militias 'own' and exploit specific smuggling routes and border segments. This new form of 'property' has not displaced traditional land tenure but coexists with it forming a new territorial regime characterized by the proliferation of domestic borders and the exploitation of gates. This talk examines the various jurisdictions and types of ownership involved in the economic exploitation of crossing points on the Sonora/Arizona borderlands.
