Sept. 20, 2024

David Soren's new book What Were They Afraid Of: The Cemetery of the Infants Near Lugnano in Treverina written with the collaboration of three of his former UA graduate students: Jordan Wilson (Soa) and David
Pickel and Delaney Fisher (Classics) has just been released in conjunction with the
Soprintendenza archeologica per l'Umbria and is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble,
etc.

The book describes the terror in the mid fifth century when what it is believed to be a
Plasmodium falciparum malaria epidemic struck the area of the Tiber River Valley north of Rome leading to massive numbers of deaths and bizarre ritual practices found in one of the largest late Roman infant cemeteries known. The story has been featured on CNN, Sky News, Ancient Unexplained Mysteries and many other media sources. New geophysical prospection just completed this summer at the site with the University of Trieste have revealed an enormous water storage and distribution center (castellum) supplying a major Roman villa of the Augustan period, around 30 B.C. In the ruins of which the infant cemetery was later installed. The book has been published in both English and Italian versions, the latter translated by Dr. Roberto Montagnetti.
