graOverview: Jewish mourning traditions are designed to bring the community together to honor the dead and comfort the mourners. But what happens when the community does not have a shared culture around these rituals? Or when the rituals do not provide comfort? Dr. Gila Silverman will share insights from her ongoing ethnographic research on Jewish mourning, discussing the many different ways that American Jews navigate and negotiate with their traditions, the influence of secular American mourning cultures on Jewish life, and the ways in which these rituals map onto current understandings of the psychological processes of grief.
