About Neşe Kaya Özkan

I am a second year Ph.D. student in Linguistic Anthropology program at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the School of Anthropology, I completed my BA degree in Foreign Language Education at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey in 2008. I received my first MA degree at the same university in Linguistics Program in 2011 with a thesis focusing on the ethnic identity formation of second and third generation Cretan immigrants whose ancestors were subjected to a population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s. For my second MA degree which I received from Sabanci University in 2014 in Cultural Studies, I have shifted my focus to the study of language, ethnic identity, and nationalism. My Master’s research examined the relationship between language and identity construction among Turkish and Hemshin bilingual Hemshin speakers living predominantly in the northeastern Turkey. For my Ph.D. research, I focus on language ideologies, identity construction, ethnic-linguistic activism and national belonging and dis-belonging among Hemshin people in Turkey.
