About Jessica MacLellan

I am a Ph.D. candidate focusing on Mesoamerican archaeology. In my dissertation research, I investigate the role of household ritual in the development of ancient Maya society. Over the past few years, I excavated an early residential area at the site of Ceibal, in Guatemala.

Projects

I am a member of the Ceibal-Petexbatún Archaeological Project, directed by UA professors Takeshi Inomata and Daniela Triadan.  Our research is focused on the Preclassic period at the ancient Maya center of Ceibal, in the Department of Petén, Guatemala.  The Ceibal Project is a collaboration by Guatemalan, Japanese, European, and US archaeologists.  My dissertation research into early households and ritual at the Karinel Group, Ceibal, has been supported by the National Science Foundation (BCS-1518794), the Alphawood Foundation (grant to Triadan and Inomata), SBSRI, the School of Anthropology, the GPSC, the Cacioppo Foundation, and the Tinker Foundation. I recently began an archaeological outreach project in the schools of Las Pozas, a Q'eqchi' Maya community near Ceibal.

Previously, I worked and learned on the Xibun Archaeological Research Project (Belize, 2007), the San Bartolo Regional Archaeological Project (Guatemala, 2008), and the La Playa Burial Rescue Project (Mexico, 2009).

I was a Jacob K. Javits Fellow (U.S. Department of Education) 2009-2013. I spent the 2016-2017 academic year as a Junior Fellow at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library & Collection.
