“La Doce: Barrio Food Democracy in Tucson’s South Side”
A multi-agency effort between Community Food Bank, Tierra y Libertad, City of Tucson Sustainability Office, Community Foundation and Southwest Folklife Alliance employed methods of ethnographic inquiry, community organizing, and asset mapping to upend notions of expert knowledge and food justice in one of Tucson’s most iconic Mexican and Chicano food zones. Learn how it was done, what was learned, and what is next in the making for this effort.
Maribel Alvarez holds the Jim Griffith Chair in Public Folklore at the Southwest Center, University of Arizona; she is also Associate Professor in the School of Anthropology, currently teaching The Anthropology of Food course. She is Executive Director of the Southwest Folklife Alliance, an affiliate nonprofit of the University of Arizona, which produces the annual Tucson Meet Yourself festival in addition to another 20+ programs connecting artisanal economies, foodways, and traditional arts to community organizing and neighborhood-based economic development. She has conducted research on wheat and identity in Sonora, Mexico as a Fulbright Fellow and co-launched with her colleague Gary Nabhan the Sabores Sin Fronteras initiative at the University of Arizona.
