Margaret Nelson - Mimbres Lives and Landscapes of Southwestern New Mexico

Archaeology Café 2018-2019: Making Connections

Over a thousand years ago, the people of the Mimbres Region in southwestern New Mexico were gathering in large villages and crafting the intricately painted distinctive black-and-white bowls we easily recognize today. But what do we know about these people? Dr. Nelson will share insights into the lives of these people, changes in their leadership and social structure over the years, and what their dramatic pottery designs might still tell us today.

About the Speaker: Now living in Tucson, Dr. Margaret Nelson has been Professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change and recently retired as Vice Dean of Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. She has been recognized for her teaching excellence as ASASU Centennial Professor, Parents Association Professor of the Year, and ASU President’s Professor. She has conducted research in the Mimbres region of southwest New Mexico for over 40 years, collaborating for the past 25 years with Dr. Michelle Hegmon. Their work focuses primarily on the Classic to Postclassic transformation.

About Archaeology Café: Presented by Archaeology Southwest, a nonprofit organization working across the Southwest to explore and protect the places of our past, Archaeology Café is an informal forum where adults can learn more about the Southwest’s deep history and speak directly to experts. At Archaeology Café, we break down the static, jargon-laden dynamic of traditional lectures, and have an expert share some ideas with the group in ways that get discussion going. (Food and drink make things a little livelier, too.)

When & Where: We gather at The Loft Cinema (3233 E. Speedway Blvd.) around 5:30 p.m. to visit and enjoy food and beverages. Programs begin at 6 p.m. in Theatre 1. Seating is open and unreserved. The Loft has plenty of free parking!

Cost: Archaeology Café is free. Guests are encouraged to purchase their own refreshments from The Loft’s impressive concession bar. Offerings include tamales, pizza, wraps, sandwiches, snacks, and a great selection of local beers and wines.

Archaeology Café is made possible by The Smith Living Trust and Arizona Humanities.
