Edwin Wilmsen received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology in 1967 and is now 82 years old, but is still very active in research. He was just awarded another research grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation. This will support two months of fieldwork this summer in Botswana and a visit to Tucson for a couple of weeks in January 2014, when he will continue his long-running collaboration with Professor David Killick and graduate student Dana Drake Rosenstein. Killick and Rosenstein apply the technique of optical petrography to compare clay samples collected by Wilmsen to samples of archaeological pottery excavated by Wilmsen and James Denbow (University of Texas at Austin) from 30 archaeological sites in Botswana that span about 1800 years. These allow the archaeologists to document exchange of pottery, or migration, across northern Botswana.
