Tom Sheridan Receives Top Award

Congratulations to Thomas E. Sheridan, Ph.D. who received the 2009 Gold Award from the Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS) Past Presidents' Book Award for his book Landscapes of Fraud.

Landscapes of Fraud explores how the penetration of the evolving capitalist world-system created and destroyed communities in the Upper Santa Cruz Valley of Arizona from the late 1600s to the 1970s.  Sheridan melded history, anthropology, and critical geography to create a penetrating view of greed and power and their lasting effect on those left powerless.

You can obtain a copy of Sheridan's book through the University of Arizona Press at this LINK.

Back in December 2008 and January 2009, the exhibit of photographs through the microscope that Rachel Freer (ASM) and Dr. David Killick (Professor of Anthropology) co-organized at the Arizona State Museum, and to which many of the IGERT Fellows contributed, is now available through the ASM web page as a 16-minute podcast; the direct link is:

http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu/podcasts/ep033_beyond_naked_eye.shtml

Dr. Killick improvised the voice-over for an Art class that was touring the Museum, and was unable to discuss all images individually; therefore, apologies to those whose work is not discussed in the podcast.  The intended audience is local K-12 art and science classes. Therefore, this is part of IGERT outreach.
