Deparmental Financial Assistance

Department assistantships, scholarships and fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence. This distinguishes them from financial aid and loans which are based on need and applied for through the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The departmental opportunities include:

  • Registration and Graduate Tuition Scholarships which waive registration fees and out-of-state tuition, respectively.
  • One-year Haury Fellowships: which provide a one-year stipend of $18,000.00 and a waiver of in-state and out-of-state tuition.
  • One-year Graduate College Fellowships, which provide a one-year stipend of $10,000.00 and a waiver of out-of-state tuition.
  • Teaching and Research Assistantships which waive out-of state tuition and cover a portion of in-state tuition.

Applicants for graduate study will automatically be considered for merit based awards; there is no separate application procedure. The departmental admissions committee will make selections and financial assistance will be included with admissions letters for those students who have been selected. You should be aware, however, that all of these awards are extremely competitive. We do not have many waivers or fellowships to allocate, and Teaching Assistantships administered by the Department are granted to first-year students only under unusual circumstances. Research assistantships are awarded to first-year students based on the availability of faculty research grants by individual faculty members. Information on the IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) funding available for Fall 2006 is on the following website:

The Department administers several endowed funds that support small grants for research. Applications for these small grants are accepted only from students who have already begun graduate study in the Anthropology Department. The Department cannot guarantee support for graduate study. Funds for support of graduate study at the University of Arizona are restricted, and applicants must realize that a considerable number of years will be required to earn a higher degree. We recommend that all students anticipating graduate studies should fully inform themselves of all funding opportunities offered by private and government sources, such as the National Science Foundation, Javitts, Wenner-Gren, and Mellon Scholarship programs.
